VENUS CAPSULE COLLECTION
For this project, each participating designer in the Astral Affair runway show was assigned a planet and an Atlanta monument to reference for each of our collections. The planet Venus and Fox Theater (Atlanta) were assigned to me and here is how each piece is referenced:
LOOK 1 / ROSE PETAL JUMPSUIT: represents the “love” and romance planet Venus is often associated with while also tying in the glitz and glam from common theater wardrobes.
Materials: Chiffon (rose petal hem and bust) and 4-way Spandex/Elastane (bodysuit)
LOOK 2 / CANADIAN TUX: primarily represents the blue interior ceiling of the Fox Theater as well as the architecture of the building.
Materials: 100% Cotton/Denim, Gold Rope, Cubic Zircona jewels, Chandelier gems, and brass clasps.
LOOK 3 / CROCHET GOWN: references the greek mythology of the goddess, Venus. She’s often visually symbolized with opulence and pearls which is shown through the beaded pearl detailing on the models thigh and the iridescent fabric of the bust piece.
Materials: 100% Polyester yarn, Pleated Organza, freshwater pearl beads.
LOOK 4 / DURAG: highlights the love for the black experience and key imagery that symbolizes love for our culture and hair. This durag features hand beaded embellishments along the length of the train and is paired with a freeform crochet top and a sheer organza pant.
Materials: 100% satin, 100% acrylic, 100% organza.
LOOK 5 / BRONZE GOWN: references the boldness of old hollywood/glamour costumes (i.e. Josephine Baker). This also ties references to the alien depicted in Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” During the runway, there was an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction and the final look was compromised. My model still walked with a tweaked version of the original piece.
Materials: 100% silk, bronze taffeta blend.
